In foods, anise is used as a flavoring agent. It has a sweet, aromatic taste that resembles the taste of black licorice. It is commonly used in alcohols and liqueurs such as anisette and ouzo. Anise extract can be used in baked goods and to flavor drinks such as coffee, tea or hot chocolate. 

As a general rule, to add anise to a recipe, start with 1/2 teaspoon per cup of dry ingredients, plus 1/4 teaspoon per cup of liquid ingredients.
